Customise header image

Personalizing is a very good idea. Many of the themes in WordPress.com have an option that allows users to upload their personal header pictures to achieve a more personal look. This is a completely free service, and you don’t need to buy an updated package to make these changes.

Look at the following video to see how quickly it works, and continue reading to see examples and configurations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf_ST7gvY8c

Upload a personalized header image

To begin, open the customizer. Not familiar with the customizer? Just click on My Sites in the admin bar and then click on Customize in the sidebar. There, look for the Header Image section. (If you can’t see this section, it means that your theme doesn’t support the use of this personalized header image). Here, you can chose between your images- if you have one recently uploaded- and a suggested selection of images for your current theme if there are some. Do you want to add a new picture? Easy! Just click on Add New and you can chose an image from you Blog library o upload a picture from your computer- just grab and release. Once the image is chosen, you can cut it to your preference, or you can skip this step if the size of the image fits in the dimensions of your subject.

New header image

You like what you see? Press the Save button in the lower right corner to apply the changes. The image should appear immediately. If not, please contact WordPress Support. Be sure to provide a detailed description of the header image you are trying to upload or attach the image for them to see more closely.

Flexible headers

If your theme supports Flexible Headers, you can skip the cut - The header image will be added without cropping so you can use one that is taller or shorter than the size defined by the theme when you cut it. Not all themes have support for flexible headers yet, but WordPress is working to add support for more themes over time. To see which themes support flexible headers you can use The Theme Showcase filtered by flexible headers.

Important: Only .jpeg, .gif, and .png can be used. All the cut images convert into .jpeg. Using an image of the exact size will produce the best results, and is fully recommended. To retain image transparency use a .gif or .png image of the exact size.

Delete header images

If you decide to delete one of your customized images, you can go to Media à Library and click “Delete Permanently” below the image.

Header text

Many of the themes will show the Title of your Blog and an optional label on the text or next to the header image. With many themes you can change the color of this text https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-colors/#header-text-color  from the customizer using the colors and backgrounds tool. You can also edit the title of your blog and the motto from the customizer in the Site Identity panel.

Find themes that support personalized headers.

View all the topics that support Custom Headers or visit the Themes Showcase and click on Find a topic → Features, then check the Custom Headers box.
